BERNALILLO COUNTY, NM — A repeat DWI offender is set to remain in jail after a crash Friday, June 2, near Isleta Pueblo that killed a man and left two others severely injured, reports KOB4.

New Mexico State Police said the fatal wreck took place on a span of Interstate 25 near the city, but have not disclosed an exact location.

A preliminary investigation shows the suspect, Jonathan Lujan, 22, was driving without an interlock license when his vehicle hit the back of a pickup truck, causing the pickup to overturn.

The driver of the victim vehicle, Hector Beltran, 66, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Authorities said the decedent’s wife and daughter, 39 and 10, respectively, were passengers in the pickup. Both suffered severe injuries and were transported to a local hospital.

Following the crash, Lujan was arrested for his third DWI, this offense being his second within just the last two months.

On Tuesday, June 13, after consideration of the circumstances, a judge announced that Lujan is to remain in jail, citing that his release at this time appears to pose “a danger to the community.”

Lujan faces multiple charges, including “homicide by vehicle.”
