Young woman dies after Las Cruces rollover crash involving stolen vehicle

DOÑA ANA COUNTY, NM –Two teens were arrested early Saturday after a stolen vehicle overturned in Las Cruces, fatally injuring a 20-year-old woman, reports KOAT.

The wreck took place on a stretch of Walnut Street near Young Park shortly after 12:00 a.m.

Preliminary details collected by the Las Cruces Police Department indicate officers were trying to stop a 2017 Hyundai Tucson that was reported stolen. The vehicle was seen driving onto Walnut Street near the park and then reversing into the parking lot. At one point, it struck a curb and overturned, ejecting the young woman before rolling onto her.

First responders pronounced the victim, Leilani Solis, deceased at the scene.

The driver, a 16-year-old boy, and one of the other passengers, a 15-year-old boy, tried to run away from the scene but were apprehended. As of this writing, another 15-year-old male passenger who fled the scene has not been located.

The teen driver, who is being held in the juvenile section of the Doña Ana County Detention Center, has been charged with “vehicular homicide, child abuse, fleeing from an officer, property damage and receiving or transferring a stolen vehicle.”

No further details have been shared at this time.
