ALBUQUERQUE, NM — A two-vehicle wreck involving a DWI suspect early Sunday in northeast Albuquerque has claimed the life of a passenger, according to KOAT.

Albuquerque Police said the fatal accident took place on a stretch of Paseo Del Norte Boulevard Northeast near the Interstate 25 southbound entrance ramp. Officers were dispatched to the scene some time after 12:00 a.m.

A preliminary investigation indicates a Ford Focus was heading westbound on Paseo Del Norte Boulevard when its driver observed the headlights of an oncoming Honda, which was traveling in the wrong direction. Authorities said the Ford driver tried to quickly change lanes to avoid a crash, but the Honda driver also tried to change lanes at the same time. As a result, the two vehicles collided.

A passenger in the Ford was pronounced deceased by first responders at the scene.

Both drivers were transported to an area hospital where their conditions remain undisclosed. Officers noted that the driver of the Honda displayed signs of impairment at the time of the wreck.

The APD’s Fatal Crash Unit is handling an investigation.
