SANTA FE, NM — A man was seriously hurt Tuesday, July 4, when he was struck by a vehicle while walking on a sidewalk in southwest Santa Fe, according to KRQE.

Santa Fe Police said the incident occurred near the intersection of Cerrillos Road and Zafarano Drive, just northwest of Plaza Santa Fe, at about 1:30 p.m.

The victim told authorities he was on the sidewalk and traveling by foot toward a business when he was hit by a black pickup truck. Because the victim was only able to have a glance at the vehicle, he was unable to provide a make and/or model.

After the driver fled the scene, the victim was able to drag himself to access his cell phone and call for help. First responders rushed him to an area hospital for a serious injury to his right leg. His family said he underwent surgery in which rods and screws were placed in his leg to save the limb. He faces an eight-week recovery.

At this time, Santa Fe Police have not been able to share any further information on the hit-and-run suspect, who remains at large. Officials noted that no cameras were present near the crash site.

The fleeing driver faces multiple charges, including “leaving the scene of an accident with injuries, failure to stop and render aid and failure to report the incident to law enforcement agency.”

An investigation remains ongoing. Anyone who may have relevant information is urged to reach out to the department.
