ALBUQUERQUE, NM — A multi-agency investigation is underway following a wrong-way crash and the death of driver Sunday afternoon in southwest Albuquerque, reports KOAT.
The accident happened in the area of 98th Street and Gibson Boulevard at about 2:00 p.m.
According to Albuquerque Police, officers tried to pull over a wrong-way vehicle, but the driver failed to stop. Shortly after, the vehicle struck a guardrail and a utility box.
After exiting the vehicle, which had an airbag deployed, the male driver was placed under police custody. The department said the driver appeared to suffer a medical episode before medical assistance could arrive on the scene. He was subsequently pronounced deceased by responding Albuquerque Fire Rescue crews.
As per department protocol when a death occurs under police custody, a task force of multiple area agencies is investigating the incident.
COLFAX COUNTY, NM — A 31-year-old man from California was critically injured Sunday morning, February 11, due to a rollover semi-truck wreck on Interstate 25 near south Raton, reports KRTN Radio.
The accident was reported on a stretch of I-25 at mile marker 429, near Kappis Arroyo Road. New Mexico State Police and crews with Raton Fire and Emergency Services were dispatched to the scene at around 9:10 a.m.
According to the NMSP, the man was driving at speeds too fast for the snow-packed and icy road conditions at the time, which factored into the wreck.
First responders arrived to find the semi rolled onto its side within the median. Care Flight 16 crews had the male driver flown to UNM Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition.
The NMSP continues to investigate.
