ALBUQUERQUE, NM — A man suffered critical injuries as a result of a crash with an APD officer who was fleeing gunfire in Albuquerque’s Fair West neighborhood, according to KOAT.

The incident unfolded in the area of Alvarado Drive Northwest and Central Avenue, where Albuquerque Police Department Chief Harold Medina was waiting at a stop light with his wife in an unmarked black APD Ford pickup truck.

Preliminary details indicate Medina and his wife observed at least two people engaged in a dispute at the intersection. At one point, one of those individuals reportedly brandished a gun and shot at least one round at the other. The APD said that other individual began running toward Medina’s direction.

Shortly after Medina attempted to drive away from the gunfire, the Ford collided with a Mustang, which was traveling on a green light at the intersection. The impact sent both vehicles on a slight spin, causing the Mustang to hit a curb before skidding down the roadway.

According to officials, Medina checked on the man who was in the line of gunfire, who said he was unharmed. The reported shooting victim and suspect fled the scene before detectives arrived.

First responders transported the driver of the Mustang to UNM hospital with critical injuries. His condition was later listed as stable, with doctors anticipating that he will fully recover.
