"Interviewer:
All right, well get ready to walk. It's the Walk Like MAAD event, and here to fill us in more, Bert, Dolly, and Joan. Good morning, you three.

Bert Parnall:
Morning.

Dolly Otero:
Morning.

Interviewer:
Let's talk more about MAAD, and before we get to the event coming up to lace up your walking shoes, let's talk DUI stats. Because with Uber and Lyft, I would think, oh, these statistics are getting lower, but Bert, that's really not the case?

Bert Parnall:
No, DWI is as big a problem as its been over the past few years. We're grateful to Uber and Lyft, it does help, but still there were 147 deaths in 2017 and 172 in 2016. And 57 year to date, so it's still a huge, huge problem.

Interviewer:
Big problem. And what does MAAD do to help DUI victims?

Dolly Otero:
Right. We help in three ways. The first one is financial recovery, trying to make the victim whole. Finding resources for them, getting them funeral expenses covered, getting them copays or to see doctors. That sort of thing. The second thing is that we help emotionally. We're there for them. When they call us, we do an assessment on them-

Interviewer:
Give them that support system.

Dolly Otero:
Right.

Interviewer:
Yeah.

Dolly Otero:
The third thing is that we attend court with them. Walk them through the legal process. It's confusing if you've never been involved with the court systems.

Interviewer:
Got you. And MAAD has this Walk the Line event coming up. If you sign up soon, it's at the lower rate. But again, we're helping a good cause, so tell us more about the Walk the Line.

Joan Halsal:
The walk is a wonderful event for families to come at together and encourages their friends, and families, and anyone to walk with and to how their support. And that is at the end of the month, and as we prepare to get ready for Labor Day, we put a lot of thought into what we were going to do, if we were going to go camping, if we were going to go to a party. We want people to make sure that they take that extra step and make sure you have your rides available home. It's much better to receive a phone call saying, "Hey, I need a ride home." Than it is to say, "Someone you love has passed away or is extremely hurt." So be prepared, make those phone calls, make those plans, be available, and then join us as we honor families that have lost a love one, and we continue the goal of MAAD.

Interviewer:
Okay. Bert, were you going to touch more on this? Because again, I want those ... everybody wants those statistics to go down, so use Ride Share, Uber, and Lyft. How else can the public really put a stop on DUI?

Bert Parnall:
Well, it's important to have fun, but it's important to have a plan, just like Joan said. And that should be making sure that you know how to use that app, or that you have the number before you even go out. But another thing, in terms of one of MADD's missions is to prevent underage drinking. Talk to your teens as well. Talk to your teens.

Interviewer:
Have that open conversation, that open dialogue.

Bert Parnall:
Right.

Interviewer:
