ALBUQUERQUE, NM — One person died early Friday after a head-on collision in northwest Albuquerque’s Paradise Hills Civic neighborhood, reports KOB4.

The Albuquerque Police Department said the fatal crash occurred on Unser Boulevard, just south of Paradise Boulevard Northwest. Officers and first responders arrived on the scene at around 3:13 a.m.

A preliminary investigation shows a BMW was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes at the same time a Chevrolet pickup truck was heading northbound. In an attempt to avoid a crash, the driver of the pickup veered into the southbound lane. However, the BMW driver also entered the southbound lane and did not allow the pickup sufficient time to return to the northbound lane. Moments later, the two vehicles collided.

The driver of the BMW was pronounced deceased on the scene, confirmed officials.

The driver of the pickup, who suffered chest pains, was transported to University of New Mexico Hospital (UNMH). After a DWI screening, officials determined the surviving driver was not impaired at the time of the crash.

No other injuries were reported.

An investigation remains ongoing, but speed and improper driving on the part of the BMW driver are believed to have contributed to the fatal wreck.
