LEA COUNTY, NM — Three people died last Friday, October 27, as a result of a head-on collision on U.S. Highway 82 near Lovington that left one other person injured, reports KRQE.

According to New Mexico State Police, the fatal accident happened near milepost 163, west of the city, in the early hours of the day.

A preliminary investigation found that Miguel Angel Delacruz, 24, was driving east on a westbound lane of the highway when his car collided head-on with an oncoming pickup truck.

Delacruz and the driver of the pickup, 74-year-old Emigdio Montano, were both pronounced deceased at the scene. Officials also confirmed that Delacruz’s passenger, whose age and identity remains undisclosed at the time of KRQE’s report, also died from their injuries at the site.

First responders rushed a 31-year-old passenger from Montano’s truck to an area hospital for unspecified injuries.

An investigation remains underway, but the NMSP said alcohol has been ruled out as a contributing factor in the wreck. Officials observed that seatbelts were not correctly worn by at least two of the victims.
