SANDOVAL COUNTY, NM — A woman was treated for minor injuries Friday morning after a hot-air balloon overturned as it landed near Rio Rancho, reports Rio Rancho Observer.

Rio Rancho Police, Rio Rancho Fire Rescue, and several Albuquerque agencies responded to the scene near Golf Course Road and Westside Boulevard. The incident was reported just after 10:00 a.m.

An early investigation indicates a balloon in the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta began running low on fuel, prompting its pilot to find a landing area.

The balloon eventually was able to come down in an open area away from residences, but the aircraft landed roughly, causing its gondola to drag across the ground of the arroyo. Both the balloon and the gondola then came to rest on their sides.

In the aftermath, woman sat inside the overturned gondola as she received medical treatment from first responders.

Officials have not shared additional details at this time.
