Woman convicted for fatal DWI crash on US 54 in Chaparral

CHAPARRAL, NM – According to the Office of the District Attorney Twelfth Judicial District, a jury convicted a woman on June 25 of a deadly DWI crash on US 54 on March 5, 2023.

Rebecca Herrera, 34, was driving from a party in El Paso to another location in El Paso when she became disoriented and entered New Mexico.

Herrera was heading south in the northbound lanes of US 54 near the Otero Prison Facility in Chaparral at 99 mph when she collided head-on with Issac Garcia around 1:43 a.m.

Garcia, 21, died in the crash. First responders transported Herrera to an area hospital for treatment.

Herrera told deputies she had been drinking excessively at the party before getting behind the wheel.

New Mexico State Police took over the investigation and arrested Herrera.

An Otero County jury found Herrera guilty of Vehicular Homicide while Driving While Intoxicated after ten minutes of deliberation on June 25.

Accident near Sunset Memorial Park reduces Interstate 40 to 1 lane

ALBUQUERQUE, NM – A collision at Interstate 40 westbound and University Boulevard Northeast shut down all but one lane Tuesday evening, according to KKOB Traffic.

The incident occurred around 6:17 p.m.

It is unclear if anyone was hurt in the crash.

Deputies investigate motorcycle collision on Bridge Boulevard Southwest

SOUTH VALLEY, NM – According to the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office, deputies are investigating a motorcycle wreck that occurred at Bridge Boulevard Southwest and Sunset Road Southwest Tuesday afternoon.

Officials posted about the accident on X around 1:18 p.m.

Authorities urged motorists to avoid the area.
