LEA COUNTY, NM — An 18-year-old from El Paso, Texas died last Wednesday after a wreck that injured another young adult on NM-128 near Jal, reports KTSM.

Officials with the New Mexico State Police responded to the scene near milepost 47, west of the city.

An early investigation shows the El Paso teen was behind the wheel of a 2019 Ford pickup truck heading eastbound. At one point, the pickup traveled into the opposing lanes and collided head-on with a 2014 Volvo commercial vehicle. The Volvo then hit an eastbound 2022 Ford F-250 pickup truck.

The NMSP said the teen succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

The driver of the Volvo, 22, was taken to a nearby hospital with injuries that appeared non-fatal. None of the occupants in the Ford F-250 were injured.

An investigation remains ongoing, but officials said all occupants are believed to have worn seat belts at the time of the crash. Alcohol does not appear to have been a factor.
