The fatal wreck occurred on the westbound highway near mile marker 63, just before 3:00 p.m.
According to New Mexico State Police, the man was driving a Nissan eastbound in the westbound lanes when the Nissan hit a Chevrolet pickup truck head-on.
First responders pronounced the Nissan driver, a resident of Woodlands, Texas, deceased at the scene.
The driver of the Chevrolet, a 46-year-old man, sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene.
NMSP noted seat belts appeared to have been worn properly by both drivers, but alcohol is being considered as a factor.
