DOÑA ANA COUNTY, NM — A 16-year-old student died Friday afternoon after being hit by a car near Organ Mountain High School in Las Cruces, reports KOAT.
Las Cruces Police were called to the scene on Bataan Memorial East, near Mesa Grande Boulevard, where officers discovered the victim deceased.
The circumstances behind the incident remain unclear at this time, but the driver stayed at the scene. He was arrested shortly after and was booked into Doña Ana County Detention Center, where he is being held without bond. Authorities said he faces one count of involuntary manslaughter.
An investigation remains ongoing, but police said “excessive speed” appears to have contributed to the fatal event.
