Pedestrian struck, killed by vehicle near New Mexico State University

LAS CRUCES, NM – A man was struck and killed by a vehicle near the New Mexico State University campus Saturday morning, according to a press release from the university.

NMSU police identified the victim as 32-year-old Julio Caro of Doña Ana County. The incident occurred on Triviz Drive between Film Street and Cholla Road near the Las Cruces campus. Investigators said Caro was struck by a southbound vehicle at about 6:45 a.m.

The driver stayed at the scene, cooperated with the investigation and is not currently facing any criminal charges. Alcohol was not believed to have been a contributing factor in the collision.

Triviz Drive was closed in both directions for the police investigation.

Crash blocks stretch of I-40 as winter storm makes roads treacherous

CLINES CORNERS, NM – Traffic was slowed along a portion of Interstate 40 Thursday morning due to an accident involving a commercial vehicle, KOAT reported.

The New Mexico Department of Transportation said the collision occurred between Albuquerque and Santa Rosa.

I-40 was shut down in both directions for several hours near the Gonzalez Ranch exit east of Clines Corners. The crash happened as a winter storm was making for treacherous driving conditions in many parts of New Mexico during Thursday morning’s commute.

Montaño Road closed due to ice and multiple crashes

ALBUQUERQUE, NM – The Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office responded to multiple crashes on Montaño Road after the storm caused ice-covered roadways.

The BCSO issued an advisory at about 9 a.m. stating that Montaño was closed in both directions at the Rio Grande. One of the crashes was reported by KRQE to have involved a city bus, but no major injuries were reported.

Drivers were advised to use Paseo Del Norte or I-40 as alternate routes. All lanes were reopened about an hour later.
