CHAVES COUNTY, NM – A judge in Chaves County has sentenced a driver who was involved in a fatal car accident on June 15, reports the Roswell Daily Record.

The collision happened at the intersection of Southeast Main Street and Brasher Road in Roswell. Police said 70-year-old Inez Crawley of Los Lunas was driving a Toyota Camry on Southeast Main Street when she went through a red light and crashed into the passenger side of an F-150 pickup truck going west on Brasher Road.

Crawley’s sister, 76-year-old Ellen Adams of Albuquerque, was a passenger in the Camry and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Crawley was initially charged with homicide by vehicle, great bodily harm. Under the terms of a plea agreement with prosecutors, she pleaded no contest to careless driving and failure to obey a traffic signal.

Chaves County Magistrate Judge E.J. Fouratt gave Crawley a 90-day sentence with all time suspended and to be served on unsupervised probation.
