TAOS COUNTY, NM – Authorities have identified the victim of a fatal two-vehicle crash in Taos County last week, the Taos News reports.

The Taos County Sheriff’s Office said 43-year-old Julia Downs of Albuquerque died in the accident on U.S. 64 west near mile marker 248 near the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge. According to investigators, a Ford Expedition driven by Frank McAleer appeared to have crashed into a Volvo station wagon that had stopped to make a left turn. Downs was pronounced dead at the scene, while McAleer sustained injuries that were not life-threatening.
U.S. 64 was shut down in both directions for about two hours for the crash investigation. The Taos County Sheriff said speed and inattention were being investigated as contributing factors in the wreck.
Downs had recently moved to Taos to work as a prosecutor with the Eighth Judicial District Attorney’s office, the report said.
