ALBUQUERQUE, NM – The Albuquerque Police Department has released an update on a fatal crash that took place early Thursday morning.

This is an update to a previous story.

Two vehicles were involved in the collision at the intersection of Avenida Cesar Chavez and the southbound Interstate 25 off-ramp shortly before 4:30 a.m.

Investigators stated that a man driving a Chevrolet Cavalier south on I-25 exited at Avenida Cesar Chavez at a high rate of speed and went through a red traffic signal. The Cavalier crashed into a Hyundai that was going through the intersection with a green traffic signal.

The driver of the Cavalier was thrown from the vehicle and died of his injuries at the scene. His name was not released. The driver of the Hyundai suffered injuries that were not life-threatening.

Police said speed on the part of the Cavalier driver was a contributing factor in the wreck.
