SANTA FE, NM – A man has been sentenced to prison in connection with a November 2019 crash that claimed the life of an Albuquerque hip-hop artist, the Santa Fe New Mexican reports.

26-year-old Diego Pichardo of Santa Fe was found guilty of vehicular homicide for causing the accident that left 30-year-old Andrew Martinez dead and another man injured.

Investigators said Pichardo was driving a Chevrolet pickup truck on the wrong side of West Alameda Street at about 60 miles an hour when he collided with a Ford sedan driven by Martinez, who performed under the stage name Wake Self.  Martinez died three days later and another man in his car was seriously injured.

A judge sentenced Pichardo to the maximum sentence of 18 years in prison.  He will have to serve at least 85 percent of the sentence.

Martinez had been preparing to release his fourth album in the coming days when the accident occurred.
