TAOS, NM – A man has been sentenced to prison for a crash in New Mexico in July 2020 that killed a woman riding in his car, the Taos News reports.

Desiderio Garcia was driving on State Road 240 in Ranchos de Taos when his vehicle crashed into a tree at about 7 p.m. The passenger, 39-year-old Lisa Marie Day of Taos, was pronounced dead at the scene.  After the crash, New Mexico State Police determined that alcohol was a contributing factor in the incident and seatbelts did not appear to have been properly utilized.

Garcia pleaded guilty last week to vehicular homicide in the case, a second-degree felony. He was sentenced to 15 years at the New Mexico Department of Corrections. Nine years of the sentence was suspended, and Garcia will have to serve six years before being eligible for parole.
