DEMING, NM – A man is facing murder charges in connection with a fatal crash in Luna County last weekend, the Deming Headlight reports.

This is an update to a previous story.

The incident happened Saturday near a border patrol checkpoint on New Mexico State Road 11 at mile marker 19. State police said the driver of an Acura SUV circumvented the checkpoint south of Deming at about 12:35 p.m. and was fleeing border agents when the vehicle with ten people inside rolled and crashed, then caught fire.  One person, an Ecuadorian woman, was killed and nine others injured.

The driver, 19-year-old Elton Fastelum of Albuquerque, was hospitalized in Texas and will be extradited to New Mexico when he is released to face charges.  Investigators are also trying to determine whether the case involves human trafficking.
