LEA COUNTY, NM – A driver was killed in a two-vehicle crash in Lea County on Wednesday night, New Mexico State Police report.
The accident happened near the intersection of Orla Road and Pipeline Road, west of Jal, at about 9:47 p.m.
Investigators determined that the driver of a Peterbilt Commercial Motor Vehicle had slowed down to make a left turn onto Pipeline Road when the trailer was struck from behind by a Chevrolet Malibu.
The driver of the Malibu, 50-year-old Donald Ray Hass of Canyon, Texas, was pronounced dead at the scene. The 62-year-old driver of the CMV was not hurt.
State police said Hass was not wearing a seat belt at the time. Alcohol was not believed to have been a factor in the crash, which remains under investigation.
