LAGUNA, NM – New Mexico State Police reported they investigated a multi-vehicle collision in Cibola County Friday evening that left two people dead.
The crash took place on Interstate 40 near milepost 111 east of Laguna at about 5:09 p.m.
Investigators determined that a Freightliner Commercial Motor Vehicle was headed east on I-40 and approached a construction zone where traffic had slowed down. The Freightliner, driven by 28-year-old Jose Rubalcaba of Harlingen, Texas, crashed into the back of a Dodge Ram pickup truck. The impact caused the Ram to hit the back of another Freightliner CMV.
The two occupants of the pickup were pronounced dead at the scene. They were identified as the driver, 77-year-old Thomas Brent Bowen, and a passenger, 74-year-old Vicki Bowen. Both were from Prescott, Arizona.
Both drivers and both passengers in the two Freightliners were not injured.
State police said alcohol did not appear to have been a factor in the crash, but Rubalcaba was issued a citation for careless driving.
