CARLSBAD, NM – A young man was killed when his vehicle collided with a semi-truck in Eddy County early Sunday morning, authorities said.
The New Mexico State Police issued a news release on the incident that occurred on Eddy County Road 798 east of Carlsbad at about 6:30 a.m. State troopers said 19-year-old Jaime Barbosa was driving a Ford F-250 north when the vehicle crossed into the southbound lane of traffic. The driver of a Mack semi-truck noticed the pickup going in the wrong direction and pulled over on the southbound shoulder to avoid a collision. Barbosa kept going south, and the Ford F-250 collided with the semi-truck on the shoulder.
Barbosa, a resident of Kilgore, Texas, was pronounced dead after being rushed to a hospital in Carlsbad. The 49-year-old truck driver was not injured.
State police are investigating the wreck and said that alcohol does not appear to have been a contributing factor.
