COLUMBUS, NM – New Mexico State Police were on the scene of a fatal rollover accident in Luna County Saturday afternoon, reports the Deming Headlight.
The incident happened near a border patrol checkpoint on New Mexico State Road 11 at mile marker 19. State police said a driver circumvented the checkpoint north of Columbus at about 12:35 p.m. and the vehicle rolled and crashed, then caught fire.
Ten people were inside the vehicle. One person was pronounced dead. Seven were taken to Mimbres Memorial Hospital, while two others airlifted to a hospital in El Paso.
A portion of New Mexico 11 was shut down in both directions for several hours while the scene was being cleared.
New Mexico State Police and the U.S. Border Patrol are investigating the crash.
