OTERO COUNTY, NM — Several children were sent to a hospital Wednesday after a school bus overturned on U.S. Highway 70 near Mescalero, reports KRQE.
New Mexico State Police responded to the scene on a span of the highway between Muscalero and Tularosa. It was first reported by KRQE at 10:30 a.m.
According to officials, a group of middle school students were aboard a Roswell Independent School District bus heading to Las Cruces when, for reasons still unknown, it ran off the roadway and rolled into a ditch.
NMSP said injuries were reported in the crash. RISD officials later confirmed multiple students were sent to local hospitals for either treatment of minor injuries or for an evaluation. It was not immediately clear how many patients were transported.
The cause of the wreck has not been disclosed, but NMSP continues to investigate.
