Man sentenced to prison for fatal South Valley drunk driving crash

ALBUQUERQUE, NM – A man will be heading to prison in connection with a drunk driving accident that killed another driver in Bernalillo County last year, reports KRQE.

Jesus Moreno was sentenced to nine years behind bars for the Feb. 2024 crash near Jemez River Road in the South Valley in which he rear-ended another vehicle. Authorities said Moreno’s blood alcohol level was twice the legal limit at the time of the wreck.

He was subsequently arrested on a homicide by vehicle DWI charge.

Owner of restaurants in Albuquerque and Santa Fe killed in Mesilla accident

MESILLA, NM – An owner of franchise restaurants in New Mexico was killed in a car wreck in Mesilla, reports KTSM.

The victim was identified as David Leyva, who owned Jersey Mike’s restaurants in Albuquerque and Santa Fe. Deputies responded to the accident early Saturday morning at about 2:30 a.m. in the area of Calle De El Paso and Calle Pacana.

Traffic investigators learned that Leyva was driving a BMW southbound at a high rate of speed when he failed to navigate a curve in the road. The car hit a curb, went airborne, overturned and ended up near a water fountain in a local park.

Leyva, who was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the wreck, was pronounced dead at the scene. It was reported that he had been visiting the Las Cruces Jersey Mike’s location.

Crash shuts down lane on eastbound Paseo Del Norte Boulevard

ALBUQUERQUE, NM – Drivers were alerted to a crash affecting traffic in Albuquerque on Monday evening.

According to a post by the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office shortly before 5:30 p.m., the accident happened on Paseo Del Norte Boulevard. Eastbound Paseo Del Norte was reduced to one lane near the Rio Grande River.

Drivers were advised to be aware of the incident and plan ahead if they were heading to that night’s Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta event.
