Man sentenced for DUI hit-and-run crash that killed 7-year-old boy near West Park

ALBUQUERQUE, NM – According to KRQE, a man has been sentenced for a deadly DUI hit-and-run collision that took the life of a 7-year-old boy at Central Ave NW and Tingley Dr SW on Dec. 12.

Sergio Almanza was drinking at a restaurant before he got on an ATV and began driving down Central Ave. Almanza ran a red light around 8:30 p.m. and struck Aditya Bhattacharya and his 7-year-old son.

Rescue crews pronounced the boy dead at the scene and transported Bhattacharya to an area hospital with serious injuries.

Almanza turned himself in a month later. He was found guilty of homicide by vehicle DWI, great bodily harm by vehicle DWI, knowingly leaving the scene of an accident, tampering with evidence, and driving an off-highway motor vehicle on a paved street or highway in Sept. 2023.

Judge Brett Loveless sentenced Almanza to 25 years in prison.

Wreck blocks traffic near Nine Mile Hill Northeast

ALBUQUERQUE, NM – According to KKOB Traffic, a crash disrupted traffic on I-40 EB near Atrisco Vista Blvd on Wednesday.

First responders were called to the scene around 7:16 a.m.

Officials have not disclosed more information.

Crash reported near Riverfronte Estates Inc

ALBUQUERQUE, NM – According to KKOB Traffic, a wreck was reported at Irving Blvd NW and Coors Blvd NW SB on Wednesday.

The incident happened around 7:15 a.m.

It is unclear if anyone was hurt in the collision.
