OTERO COUNTY, NM — A 77-year-old La Luz man died Wednesday after a two-vehicle crash involving a police vehicle in Alamogordo, according to KOB4.

The fatal incident occurred on North White Sands Boulevard shortly after noon, while a 27-year-old female officer was responding to another emergency.

An early investigation by New Mexico State Police indicates the officer was driving southbound in a marked vehicle with its emergency lights activated when she struck the man’s vehicle.

Officials said the victim, who was driving a 2006 Chevrolet pickup truck, had just pulled into the roadway from a driveway.

Medics rushed the patient to an area hospital where he was later pronounced deceased.

The officer and her 25-year-old passenger, a dispatcher who was on a ride-along, were also transported to a hospital. They are expected to recover from their injuries.

It was unclear what caused the wreck, but NMSP said containers of alcohol were observed in the pickup.

An investigation remains in progress.
