LINCOLN COUNTY, NM — A 25-year-old man died Monday morning after a head-on collision on U.S. Highway 54 near Carrizozo, reports KOB4.
New Mexico State Police said the fatal accident occurred at milepost 130, north of the city, shortly before 9:00 a.m.
An early investigation indicates the young man, a resident of Nottingham, New Hampshire, was driving an SUV southbound when the vehicle drifted past the center line. Moments later, the vehicle collided head-on with a semi-truck.
The driver of the SUV was pronounced deceased at the scene, confirmed officials.
First responders transported the semi driver to an area hospital with undisclosed injuries.
An investigation remains ongoing, but the NMSP said both drivers were wearing seatbelts at the time, and that alcohol does not appear to have been a factor.
