VALENCIA COUNTY, NM — A 24-year-old man died late Monday after crashing his car off Interstate 25 near south Belen, reports Las Cruces Sun-News.

New Mexico State Police responded to the scene on the southbound lanes near mile marker 182, shortly after 10:30 p.m.

A preliminary investigation indicates the man was driving a 2011 Ford Taurus southbound when the car left the roadway and crashed.

Officials said the victim, a Chaparral resident, was not properly wearing his seat belt at the time of the accident. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.

An investigation by the NMSP was underway, but authorities said alcohol did not contribute to the fatal wreck.
