Man convicted of APS bus crash near Sungate Estates asks to be re-sentenced

ALBUQUERQUE, NM – According to KOB, the man who was convicted of causing an Albuquerque Public School bus crash near Sungate Estates on February 23, 2022, has asked to be resentenced.

A white Ford Mustang driven by Mario Perez, 49, was racing a blue Ford Mustang west on Gibson Boulevard Southwest when he slammed into the passenger’s side of a northbound school bus on Messina Drive Southwest at around 5 p.m. The impact caused the bus to roll over onto its driver’s side.

Following the collision, the driver of the blue Mustang did not stop.

First responders transported seven of the 23 children on the bus to area hospitals. Two children suffered serious leg injuries, and one sustained a pelvic fracture. Perez was also hospitalized.

Authorities charged Perez with two counts of Great Bodily Harm by Vehicle. He was arrested after he was released from the hospital.

Perez pleaded no contest and was sentenced to four years in prison in February. Perez’s attorney has entered a new filing asking to be resentenced. He will appear before a judge for reconsideration on Wednesday.

At least 1 hurt in accident on Interstate 40 in Carnuel

CARNUEL, NM – According to the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office, at least one person was hurt in a collision on Interstate 40 near Carnuel Monday night.

The incident occurred on Interstate 40 eastbound around 8:12 p.m.

Authorities shut down all eastbound lanes. Traffic was diverted to Carnuel.

Emergency crews respond to crash near downtown Albuquerque

ALBUQUERQUE, NM – According to KKOB Traffic, first responders were called to the scene of an accident near downtown Albuquerque Monday evening.

Dispatchers received calls concerning a collision at Interstate 40 westbound and University Boulevard Northeast around 5:34 p.m.

The cause of the collision is under investigation.
