CLOVIS, NM – Police said a driver trying to flee from a traffic stop was involved in a fatal crash in Clovis last week.
According to the Clovis Police Department, the New Year’s Day incident began when officers attempted a traffic stop on a Ford Mustang on Llano Estacado Boulevard near Main Street shortly before 3 a.m.
The driver failed to stop and fled at a high rate of speed eastbound on Llano Estacado Boulevard, ultimately leaving the city limits and heading into Curry County.
Officers lost sight of the vehicle and ended the pursuit near the intersection of Curry Road G and Curry Road 8. While checking the surrounding area, they found that the Mustang had left the roadway, rolled, and come to rest in a field south of County Road 7.
A passenger, 27-year-old Jesus Romo, was found unconscious in a field and was pronounced dead after being taken to Plains Regional Medical Center. The driver, identified as 20-year-old Julian Romo, was transported to the same hospital for treatment.
The incident remains under investigation.
ALBUQUERQUE, NM – Deputies with the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to a crash in southwest Albuquerque late Monday night.
According to the BCSO’s traffic alert at 11:50 p.m., the incident took place in the area of Coors Boulevard and Arenal Road SW.
All eastbound lanes of Arenal, all southbound lanes of Coors and two lanes of northbound Coors were shut down while the wreck was being cleared from the roadway.
MCKINLEY COUNTY, NM – Drivers were alerted to an accident slowing traffic along a stretch of Interstate 40 on Monday morning.
An advisory from the McKinley County Sheriff’s Office at 11:24 a.m. stated that the crash took place on westbound I-40 at about the 44 mile marker, near the continental divide exit.
The westbound lane of the interstate was shut down and traffic was congested near the scene. Drivers were advised to use caution when traveling through the area.
