Deputy charged for deadly crash in Deming

DEMING, NM – According to KOAT, authorities have charged a Luna County Sheriff’s Office deputy for a fatal wreck near NM 11 and Voorhies Rd on Nov. 11.

Deputy Paul Garcia, 31, was driving an LCSO patrol vehicle on his way to an active burglary call at speeds of 131 mph in a 55 mph speed limit zone.

Garcia was driving south in the northbound lane when he crashed into another vehicle at 99 mph.

A 1-year-old baby died in the crash. The driver suffered multiple fractures and a spinal herniation injury.

Garcia and another deputy inside the police vehicle were not injured.

State police found Garcia was not providing a safe amount of space when passing and followed other cars too closely while responding to the call.

Authorities charged Garcia with homicide by vehicle and great bodily injury by vehicle. Both charges are third-degree felony charges.

1 dead, 1 injured following 2-vehicle crash on I-40 near Grants

GRANTS, NM – One person is dead following a two-vehicle collision on I-40 near mile marker 89 on Tuesday, according to KOAT.

A person was driving a Honda passenger vehicle west on I-40 when they attempted to exit the interstate at mile marker 89. The driver then turned sharply and lost control of the car before coming to rest in the roadway. The driver of a commercial vehicle then collided with the Honda.

Rescue crews pronounced a passenger from the Honda dead at the scene and transported the Honda driver to an area hospital. The commercial vehicle driver was not hurt in the wreck.

The New Mexico State Police is investigating the incident.

Wreck reported on I-25 in Las Cruces

LAS CRUCES, NM – According to NMRoads, a crash was reported on I-25 NB near E Lohman Avenue on Friday.

Emergency crews responded to the incident around 7:04 a.m.

Officials have not disclosed additional details.
