MCKINLEY COUNTY, NM — Two people, including a toddler, were fatally injured in a crash last Thursday, October 19, on U.S. Highway 291 near Tohatchi, according to KRQE.

New Mexico State Police said the accident occurred on the northbound side of US-291 near milepost 34.

A preliminary investigation indicates 64-years-old Charles Lane, of Aztec, was operating a pickup truck northbound when the vehicle veered out of his lane and hit another vehicle along the shoulder.

Authorities confirmed a two-year-old child who was in the pickup was pronounced deceased at the scene.

First responders rushed Lane to an Albuquerque hospital where he died from his injuries.

No one inside the other vehicle was reported hurt.

Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the fatal crash, but an investigation by the NMSP remains ongoing.
