BERNALILLO COUNTY, NM — One person died Sunday afternoon after a crash involving a semi-truck on Interstate 40 near Tijeras, reports KOAT.
The accident happened on the eastbound side of I-40 at mile marker 175, just after New Mexico State Road 337.
Authorities have not disclosed the circumstances of the event, but a semi-truck and another unspecified vehicle were involved.
As a result of the crash, one person was pronounced deceased at the scene.
New Mexico Department of Transportation officials urged motorists to avoid the scene and find alternate routes, as a traffic backup at least 10 miles long had formed in the area.
At 4:20 p.m., all of eastbound I-40 in the area remained closed, and the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office did not immediately announce a clearance time.
