ALBUQUERQUE, NM – According to KRQE, an investigation into a deadly wreck involving a Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office deputy at Edith Blvd NE and Alameda Rd NE on Aug. 7 has found the deputy partially to blame for the crash.
BCSO deputy Bryan Lassley was driving at 70 mph in a 25 mph zone without lights or sirens and was pursuing Alexandria Gerad when she slammed her brakes, causing Lassley to rear-end her. The collision sent Gerad crashing into a wall. Gerad died from her injuries.
The report claims Lassley was following Gerad too closely and deemed his actions met the definition of “reckless driving.” The report says Gerad committed misdemeanor traffic violations before the deputy’s engagement. It also points to other factors that caused Gerad’s death, such as her speed, her not wearing her seatbelt, an airbag that didn’t deploy properly, and loose tools in her car that struck her head.
The Bernalillo County District Attorney’s Office has declined to take on the case because of its relationship with APD and BSCO. They are contacting other DAs to take on the case and determine if criminal charges should be filed.
BCSO’s internal affairs department has a copy of APD’s report and is investigating it. Deputy Lassley remains on paid administrative leave.
