Alleged drunk driver charged in fatal wreck near Shiprock

SHIPROCK, NM – A man was killed in a collision involving an alleged drunk driver outside Shiprock last week, according to a report in The Journal.

The crash took place Dec. 22 on U.S. Highway 491 near mile post 95 shortly before 5 p.m. An investigation determined that 49-year-old Casey Wade Russell of Gilbert, Arizona was driving a 2015 GMC pickup truck when he crossed the center line while driving to pass a commercial vehicle and collided head-on with a Veloster.

The driver of the other vehicle, Richard Morales of Cortez, was killed in the wreck. An investigating New Mexico State Police officer questioned Russell in the hospital and noted he smelled a strong odor of alcoholic beverage coming from the man.

Following a blood draw, Russell was charged with second-degree felony homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence and was booked into the San Juan County Detention Center.

Accident disrupts traffic along Interstate 25 southbound

ALBUQUERQUE, NM – Traffic was disrupted for motorists along a stretch of Interstate 25 in Albuquerque on Tuesday afternoon due to a crash.

According to an advisory on NMRoads at 1:26 p.m., the accident reduced I-25 southbound to one lane at mile marker 228 in the area of Montgomery Boulevard and Montano Road.

Drivers were advised to expect delays and seek alternate routes until the wreck could be cleared.

BCSO deputies respond to rollover crash in North Valley

NORTH VALLEY, NM – The Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office was called to a crash in the North Valley on Sunday afternoon.

A traffic alert posted at 4:30 p.m. stated that the incident was a rollover accident. Northbound 2nd Street NW was closed at Osuna Road NW, and eastbound Osuna was also shut down. There were no reports of injuries.

Drivers were urged to use 4th Street as an alternate route. All lanes were reported reopened about an hour later.
