7 injured as school bus collides with big rig on NM-236 near Portales

ROOSEVELT COUNTY, NM — One student was airlifted Wednesday after a school bus crash that hurt six others on State Road 236 near Portales, reports KOB4.

The accident occurred at the intersection with South Roosevelt Road T, about three miles northwest of the city, at around 7:30 a.m.

Authorities said around 25 students were aboard a school bus that collided with a tractor-trailer.

According to the Portales superintendent, one student suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to a Lubbock, Texas hospital. Six others sustained injuries considered non-life-threatening, but it was unclear whether they were taken to a hospital.

Other students who were not reported hurt were released to their guardians.

The cause of the wreck remains unclear at this time, and no charges have been reported.

An investigation by the New Mexico State Police was underway.
