ROSWELL, NM – Six people were hospitalized following a multi-vehicle collision in Roswell on Friday afternoon.
The Roswell Police Department released details of the wreck that occurred in the area of West Country Club Road and North Main Street.
A preliminary investigation determined that the driver of a pickup truck was headed east on West Country Club Road at a high rate of speed while approaching the intersection, where another vehicle was stopped at a red light. A second vehicle was approaching the intersection behind the first stopped vehicle when it was struck from behind by the pickup behind it that failed to stop or slow down.
The impact sent that vehicle into the rear of the stopped vehicle in front of it. The vehicle that had been stopped ended up in the intersection and the vehicle that was approaching behind it was propelled through the intersection and stopped on the opposite side.
The pickup continued through the intersection before veering into the parking lot of a gas station/convenience store, where it damaged two parking barriers before crashing into the store’s side wall and striking a parked vehicle that was occupied.
During the chain-reaction crash, another vehicle going south on Main Street was struck. In addition, a tire that was in the bed of the pickup flew out and struck another vehicle being driven nearby.
The six injured victims, all adults, were rescued from the vehicles by Roswell Fire Department personnel and taken to two local hospitals. Two of them were in critical condition and were flown to another hospital for further treatment.
Police continue to investigate the circumstances that led to the crash, which shut down the intersection for about four hours.

According to a Facebook post by the Chaves County Sheriff’s Office, officers responded to the crash site on the “lower road” of Bottomless Lakes State Park.
