OTERO COUNTY, NM — Three juveniles died last Friday after a two-vehicle crash that hurt three others on Angelina Boulevard in Chaparral, reports KTSM.
The fatal accident occurred at the intersection with Steve Drive, a few blocks north of the New Mexico-Texas state line. New Mexico State Police responded to the scene on the morning of November 4 at around 9:16 a.m.
According to authorities, a 16-year-old boy was behind the wheel of a 2007 Toyota Corolla traveling eastbound on Steve Drive when it ran a stop sign at Angelina Boulevard. The Toyota then struck a southbound 2019 Dodge Ram pickup truck.
The teen driver and his two passengers, a 15-year-old girl and an 18-year-old boy, were fatally injured. All three teens were pronounced deceased at the scene. Investigators believe they were not wearing seat belts at the time of the accident.
Medics transported the driver of the Dodge Ram, a 40-year-old man, along with his passengers, a 50-year-old woman and an 18-year-old boy, to a hospital in El Paso. First responders indicated their injuries appeared to be non-life-threatening.
An investigation by NMSP remains ongoing, but alcohol is not a suspected factor.
