3 dead after crash involving two semis on NM-26 near SW Hatch

DOÑA ANA COUNTY, NM — Three people died Thursday morning after a major collision on New Mexico State Road 26 near southwest Hatch, according to KRQE.

The accident occurred about 15 miles southwest of the city and was first recorded in the NM Roads map index at 5:13 a.m.

Police did not say what caused the wreck, but two semi-trucks were involved.

According to the New Mexico Department of Transportation, a span of the highway from mileposts 0 (U.S. Highway 180) to 47 (Hatch) was shut down in both directions. Motorists were asked to slow down, watch for emergency vehicles, and expect long delays in the area.

As late as 1:49 p.m., more than 8 hours later, the closure remained in place.

No other information has been provided at this time, but an investigation was underway.
