VALENCIA COUNTY, NM – The Valencia County Sheriff’s Office announced the arrest of three people in connection with a hit-and-run crash that injured a bicycle rider.
Deputies were dispatched to the area of El Cerro Loop Road and Winchester Lane after the May 13 incident. A preliminary investigation revealed that the bicyclist, 32-year-old Adrian Cuevas, was riding his bicycle in the southbound lane of El Cerro Loop when he was struck from behind at about 10:22 p.m. by a northbound Toyota Camry that swerved to avoid another vehicle.
Cuevas was taken to the University of New Mexico Hospital, where he was listed in critical but stable condition. The driver of the Camry fled the scene.
Deputies determined that the driver of the Camry was a juvenile. Warrants were issued for the driver and two women with him, including his mother.
The sheriff’s office states that the three met at a residence near La Ladera Road after the hit and run and all three then returned to the crash scene. It is alleged that one of the women met with deputies and provided a false statement about her involvement in the incident. The driver and his mother allegedly returned to their residence and stored the vehicle in the garage. It was later seized by the Valencia County Sheriff’s Office under search warrant.
All three are facing multiple charges that include accidents involving death or personal injuries and duty to render aid, tampering with evidence, and conspiracy.
