CHAVES COUNTY, NM — Two people were killed early Tuesday when their van hit a reversing tractor-trailer on U.S. Highway 380 near Roswell, reports KOB4.
The fatal collision took place on the westbound lanes at North Red Bridge Road, east of the city. New Mexico State Police arrived on the scene shortly after 4:29 a.m.
An early investigation shows a tractor-trailer was traveling westbound on the highway when its 45-year-old driver missed the right-hand turn onto the northbound side of North Red Bridge Road. The driver stopped the big rig on the shoulder of the highway and began to back up onto the missed road.
Moments later, a Chrysler van driven by an 89-year-old Bay Springs, Mississippi resident collided with the trailer.
The driver of the Chrysler and their 83-year-old passenger, also of Mississippi, were both pronounced deceased on the scene.
Officials said the driver of the tractor-trailer was not reported hurt.
NMSP continues to investigate the wreck.
