TORRANCE COUNTY, NM – One person died and another was left seriously injured Sunday after a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 40 near Encino, according to KOAT.
The Torrance County Sheriff’s Office said the fatal wreck occurred on the westbound lanes between mile markers 233 and 234.
A preliminary investigation indicates one semi-truck and another vehicle were both stopped on the westbound highway. At one point, another semi hit the back of the vehicle, sending it under the first semi.
Officials confirmed one passenger in the vehicle was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the vehicle was flown to University of New Mexico Hospital, where the severity of their condition remains unknown.
A section of I-40 was blocked in both directions for about six hours during the response and initial investigation.
At this time, no pending charges have been reported.
