ALBUQUERQUE, NM — One person died early Sunday after their vehicle crashed into a building near downtown Albuquerque, leaving another person injured, according to KOB4.
The fatal wreck occurred at the intersection of Broadway Boulevard Southeast and Hazeldine Avenue Southeast, in the Huning Highlands area. It was first reported shortly before 3:00 a.m.
Albuquerque Police said the vehicle appeared to be traveling at a high rate of speed when it collided with a tree. It then overturned and struck a power pole before slamming into a building.
The driver was pronounced deceased at the scene, confirmed officials. Their passenger was rushed to an area hospital with unspecified injuries but is expected to survive.
Authorities believe the driver may have been intoxicated at the time of the wreck, but an investigation remains underway. Investigators say they are also working to determine whether the two victims were connected to an armed carjacking that took place earlier the same night.
