1 dead, 1 arrested after hit-and-run involving bus in Portales

PORTALES, NM – A woman has been taken into custody following a fatal crash on Friday night in Portales. The incident occurred around 9:20 p.m. at the intersection of W. 2nd Street and S. Avenue C.

Upon arrival, law enforcement officers discovered Martha Lozano, a Portales resident, inside a small sedan. Portales EMS transported her to Roosevelt General Hospital, where she was later transferred to a Lubbock hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries.

According to ABC7, Lisa Poitras, a 55-year-old resident of New Hampshire, was operating the other vehicle, a 1996 bus, which returned to the scene. Witnesses reported to police that Lozano was heading north on Avenue C when Poitras’ bus failed to stop at the eastbound red light at Avenue C.

Poitras has been charged with homicide by motor vehicle and was placed in the Roosevelt County Detention Center.
