RIO RANCHO, NM – A man who was charged with causing a fatal car crash in Rio Rancho last year has reached a plea deal with prosecutors, KRQE reports.
Under the arrangement, 20-year-old Estevan Chavez of Moriarty pleaded no contest to two felony charges, while three other charges against him were dropped.
The accident occurred June 1, 2020. Authorities said Chavez was driving at over 100 miles an hour on New Mexico 528 near Barbara Loop when he slammed into another car.
A 12-year-old girl who was a passenger in the other vehicle was killed in the wreck, while the 16-year-old girl driving was severely injured. Chavez will face up to 12 years in prison when he is sentenced.

While pursuing a major in history and French at Rice University in the early 1990s, I spent a year studying at La Sorbonne in Paris in 1991. I received my B.A. from Rice University in 1993 and continued to focus on writing — mostly fiction and plays — for a year before entering New Mexico University School of Law. Since then, my team has helped to recover more than $100 million for our clients. Though my firm has grown quickly to fill the legal needs of our community, it has retained its focus on providing excellent service to clients.
