DEMING, NM – A man is facing murder charges in connection with a fatal crash in Luna County last weekend, the Deming Headlight reports.
This is an update to a previous story.
The incident happened Saturday near a border patrol checkpoint on New Mexico State Road 11 at mile marker 19. State police said the driver of an Acura SUV circumvented the checkpoint south of Deming at about 12:35 p.m. and was fleeing border agents when the vehicle with ten people inside rolled and crashed, then caught fire. One person, an Ecuadorian woman, was killed and nine others injured.
The driver, 19-year-old Elton Fastelum of Albuquerque, was hospitalized in Texas and will be extradited to New Mexico when he is released to face charges. Investigators are also trying to determine whether the case involves human trafficking.

While pursuing a major in history and French at Rice University in the early 1990s, I spent a year studying at La Sorbonne in Paris in 1991. I received my B.A. from Rice University in 1993 and continued to focus on writing — mostly fiction and plays — for a year before entering New Mexico University School of Law. Since then, my team has helped to recover more than $100 million for our clients. Though my firm has grown quickly to fill the legal needs of our community, it has retained its focus on providing excellent service to clients.
