MADD Hosting Annual Fundraising Event in October

The Parnall Law Team has passionately supported Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) for many years. This year, our firm is the presenting sponsor for MADD’s Walk Like MADD event in Albuquerque. This event aims to raise awareness and funds to help prevent drunk and drugged driving in our state and across the country.

For the past 25 years, our injury attorneys have seen firsthand the devastating impact that drunk driving can have on the lives of those in our community. Through awareness efforts like this event, we hope to make a difference and prevent severe or fatal crashes on Albuquerque roads and highways.

What Is MADD?

Mothers Against Drunk Driving is a grassroots non-profit organization supporting survivors of drunk driving and families who have lost loved ones in drunk driving crashes. They help them get through the legal and emotional process following these devastating tragedies.

MADD has offices in every U.S. state and each Canadian province. MADD’s mission is to stop drunk and drugged driving, end underage drinking, and support families who have lost loved ones in drunk driving crashes.

Background of Mothers Against Drunk Driving

Candace Lightner began a movement against drunk driving after a drunk driver with three prior DUI convictions hit her daughter, Cari Lightner, who was walking to a church carnival. Cari was thrown 125 feet and died from her injuries while the drunk driver cowardly fled the scene. He was eventually apprehended and charged with her death. Cari became the first face of drunk driving victims and continues to serve as an impetus for change.

While MADD began as a humble organization envisioned across a kitchen table, it is now a large organization that is powered by hundreds of thousands of passionate advocates and supporters. According to MADD, drunk driving has been reduced by half since the organization was founded.

MADD’s goal is to have zero deaths, injuries, and grieving families due to drunk or drugged driving.

How to Get Involved

The New Mexico chapter of the MADD organization has three fundraisers each year. Walk Like MADD is the organization’s signature fundraising event. Communities across the country, including New Mexico, come together to fundraise for the organization and bring awareness to the ongoing issue of drunk and drugged driving. It is a 5k where participants connect with other families going through the same thing or with people who help with the process. The goal is to raise $27,000 from this year’s event.

You can register or donate at the Walk Like MADD website. This year’s Albuquerque Mothers Against Drunk Driving Walk Like MADD event will take place at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday October 23, at the University of New Mexico’s Johnson Field at 2401 Redondo Dr. NE in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
